School Of Kickboxing

Billy O Sullivan

I was always into fitness and in the mid 70's I met a man called Denis Davis who was living in Waterford but was originally from Birmingham in England. Now Denis came under the banner of Lau Gar Kung Fu which was very popular in the Cinema and across the World at the time. He held classes in the St. Johns Youth Hall on Parnell Street, with my good friend's Pat and Tucker Corcoran we went down one night to have a look and straight away we loved it and signed up that night.

All my life I was lucky to come across good people and these people shaped me into the person I am today. Like many young men at the time I tried many sports but the day I ran into Liam Fogarty was the day that changed my life. Most people would know Liam more as "Fog" as this was his nick name and his sport was Kick Boxing, This is where I fell truly in love with the sport. I used to train in the Parish Hall in Lisduggan with my good friend Patsy Halloran. Kick Boxing really took off in Waterford and twice a week each week without fail there would be 60 to 70 people training under Liam Fogarty.

The enthusiasm of the young lads drove the sport forward and that is where I met a young man called Paul Lenihan, now Paul was a natural talent and soon he would represent Waterford in the National Stadium in Dublin in the All Ireland Kick Boxing Competition with Liam and myself in his corner, Paul made quiet a name for himself and later he became known as the 'Lemon Drop Kid'. Liam went on to do other things in his career so myself and Patsy took over club in Lisduggan. It soon became clear to me that this could be the start of something big, we had the foundation now to start a club that could produce some top class Kick Boxers and we did. Some of them went on to do amazing things in not only the Kick Boxing world but in their own lives as a result of our training ethic.
